A drawbridge as a symbol of openness & encounter

The heart of the circular route around Castle Mauterndorf is the lovingly designed castle park with a 26-metre-long and fully functional drawbridge . This is a work of art by the Hamburg artist Toni Schmale. The ingenious drawbridge mechanism reveals the full technical sophistication of the structure, because unlike historic drawbridges, the Mauterndorf drawbridge has two pivoting footbridges and can be accessed from both sides. So while drawbridges of castles once stood for isolation from the enemy, the new drawbridge of Castle Mauterndorf is a symbol of openness and encounter.
